Feminist bookstore In Other Words has some words they'd like to share with the television show Portlandia.

Those words are: "F*ck you."

The Happy and Gay (2021) Hindi Web Seriestelevision show Portlandiabased its feminist bookstore, Women and Women First, on the actual Portland bookstore In Other Words. While the show has filmed there for years, this spring, the store posted a sign in their window that said "Fuck Portlandia" and accused the show of oppressing marginalized people.

"Fuck Portlandia! Transmisogyny – Racism – Gentrification – Queer Antagonism – Devaluation of Feminist Discourse," the sign reads.

The sign has been up since the the show started filming Season 6, Willamette Weekreports. When the paper reached out to the store to learn about the origins of the sign, the store allegedly asked the publication to include a link in their story where people could donate to the bookstore.

Shortly after the paper expressed that they didn't feel comfortable promising "a link to the store’s fundraising platform in exchange for an interview," Mickey Karnage, a representative from the bookstore, sent this to the site:

"After some consideration and research we’ve decided to officially tell the Willamette Weekly to go fuck themselves," the email read. "Your paper has absolutely zero journalistic professionalism and you are scummy rape apologists. Thanks for the opportunity tho! Have a great night.”

On Wednesday, In Other Words posted a statement on their blog which explained the reason for the sign -- in very much their own words.

Portlandia, the statement explained, doesn't "make the bookstore any money, " generally "sucks" and treats gentrification like a "joke."

"The current board, staff, and volunteers were not involved in the decision, made six years ago, to allow Portlandia to film at In Other Words. We stand behind our collective decision to discontinue our relationship with the show. And we fucking love the sign," the statement reads.
